Frett is a duo from England that produces brilliant electronic indie music, experimenting with new sounds that frame superb lyrics. We had a brief chat with Simon about their musical project and source of inspiration.
Can you tell us, in a few words, who you are and what you do?
We are the band Frett – Simon and Elliott from Suffolk in the UK. We make electronic infused indie music… we should really have one work to describe the style…. indietronic.
What lead you to Music?
I started playing when I was a kid after being introduced to Jimi Hendrix by my parents. From that moment forward I knew what I wanted to do… and at that time it was play massive guitar solos. Hendrix used to be my thing, I was pretty obsessed. I found his music so exciting, I love the energy the way he just shut his eyes and played; he just proper felt the music and I totally dig that. I used to spend most of my time trying to play Hendix on my dad’s guitar, I even tried playing with my teeth once, which didn’t end particularly well...
However the first time I heard Radiohead was what first led me towards wanting to write music and really got me interested in writing. There’s something magical about the best Radiohead tracks.
Is your musical work reflecting your personal style?
Frett’s music is definitely really personal to me especially the lyrics. My self and Elliot both come from different musical backgrounds which is a big factor in sound, the contrast between indie and electronic music. I’ve always been interested in experimenting with sound and capturing something that makes you feel emotion and doing both of these things in our music is very important to me.
As with fashion and trends, we’re definitely influence by trends, less trying so that we follow trends, more that we are both following new music and get influenced by lots of different music.
Is art important for you?
I studied art before Frett formed and it definitely influenced me musically. Studying art made me much more experimental and had a heavy influence on me lyrically; I always imagine painting pictures with words. Art’s important in music. If you look at music as a form of art rather than just someone singing it becomes much more interesting.
Let’s talk about music in general: who’s your favorite performer and who influenced you the most? Can you think of a song from another artist you badly would have wanted to have written and performed?
I’d have to say my Fav’s (and probably biggest inspirations) are Bon Iver, Radiohead and James Blake. I saw Bon Iver play in London once, it was the best gig I’ve ever been to. I really wish I had written Weird Fishes by Radiohead (from the album In Rainbows, you can listen to it on rhapsody.com http://www.rhapsody.com/artist/radiohead/album/in-rainbows-warnerchappell-music) – huge influence for me.
Any big plan for the near future?
Musically we have just released a new single, Tyro, non-musically I plan to eat a massive pizza within the next hour and a half.
